A hob comprises a number of discs a 1 , a 2 , Fig. 1, each carrying a convolution of teeth, the edge teeth z 10 of each convolution being inserted teeth which overlap the disc edge. All the teeth c may be inserted, being secured in a continuous helical slot, Fig. 4, circular slots, individual recesses, Fig. 6, or axial-slots, Figs. 11 and 12, by taper-pins e. For sharpening a cutter, Fig. 14, in which the blades cut on alternate sides, the discs may be twisted relatively to each other so that corresponding teeth may be ground in pairs on their front faces. In a taper hob, the top disc a 1 , Fig. 13, is integral with the spigot and has integral-teeth, and the lower disc a 3 is integral with the tapershank. The lengths of the teeth on a hob having alternate right- and left-hand cutting- edges may vary. For gauging-purposes, and to assist in grinding, the two centre-teeth on a disc may have a length-scale marked thereon. |
