System for the adaptation of a communication protocol with an on-board computer of a motor vehicle

The system has two identifiers that are similar but reversed and are used in two communication protocols e.g. can calibration protocol and ISO 15765 protocol. One identifier corresponds to a question message for one protocol and to a response message for the other protocol. The protocol used by an external tool connected to an engine controller is identified, using identification units of the controller, from the identifier contained in a question message to transmit a response message containing an identifier corresponding to the protocol.
