A method for displaying an icon and controlling shortcut of a mobile terminal is provided to allow a user to directly access frequently used menu and data by setting and displaying a shortcut at a certain region of a mobile terminal. Only essential icons, among all the icons set to be displayed on an icon region, are displayed(201). When an event is generated, an icon for informing occurrence of the event is displayed together with all the other icons at the icon region(202,203).
