A method for fabricating radiation-hardened optical fibres comprising drawing the optical fibre from a preform 102, chemically treating the fibre to create defects 104, photo-conditioning the defects by launching light down the fibre 106. The chemical treatment may be with pressurised hydrogen. The light may be visible or UV light. The treatment and photo-conditioning (annealing) may alternatively be to the preform prior to or during the drawing process. The exposure to light may be from the side of the fibre. |
