A wireless telecommunication terminal having a function of controlling a radiation pattern of an antenna and a method thereof are provided to reduce an SAR(Specific Absorption Rate) and maintain a communication sensitivity optimally. In a wireless telecommunication terminal having a function of controlling a radiation pattern of an antenna(22), an antenna(22) has a predetermined radiation pattern. At least one additional ground unit(23) is connected/disconnected to/from a main ground part(21) of the antenna(22) to change the radiation pattern. A switching unit(25) connects/disconnects the main ground part(21) of the antenna(22) to/from the additional ground unit(23). A switching detection unit detects the switching of the wireless telecommunication terminal. And, a control unit controls the connection/disconnection to connect the main ground part(21) of the antenna(22) from the additional ground unit(23) according to the sensing result of the open of the wireless telecommunication terminal and to disconnect the main ground part(21) of the antenna(22) from the additional ground unit(23) according to the sensing result of the closure of the wireless telecommunication terminal.
