831,976. Hinged valves. GARRETT CORPORATION. July 26, 1956 [Aug. 17, 1955], No. 23113/56. Class 135. A closure disc 17 of a butterfly valve has limited movement in its own plane relative to a supporting head 21 on a shaft 20 which is turned to pivot the disc between closed and open positions. In Fig. 1, the head 21 has a flange 22 sprung into an inturned flange 18 on the disc 17 and having slight radial clearance therein. The disc 17 is tightly fitted for pivotal movement in one end of a flexible sleeve 11, the coned other end of which is gripped by a coned nut 12. In Figs. 4 and 5, not shown, a spring ring engages coplanar annular grooves in both the head and disc, an expander spring being provided at the base of the head-groove. In Figs. 6 and 7, not shown, there is a similar retaining spring ring, but the flexible sleeve 11 is omitted and replaced by a rolled annular sealing lip of flexible metal fused to the periphery of the disc 17.
