[Also in Group XXII] A mandrel housing unit for an extrusion press, comprises a central mandrel 4 adapted to project through the extrusion die, and a base portion 2 provided with four radially extending passages 6 for the extrusion material, leading from the outside of the base to a well 5 from the centre of which the mandrel projects. The base 2 is bolted through holes 3 against the extrusion die block 1 with an interposed locating ring 9 or spigot. The passages 6 may be opened at their upper ends or they may pass completely through the body of the base, Fig. 6 (not shown). The mandrel 4 may be integral with the base portion, Fig. 6 (not shown), or may be detachably secured thereto, Fig. 4 (not shown). The mandrel may have a spherical base seated in a similar pocket in the base whereby the mandrel may be adjusted relatively to its base by unscrewing a locking plug 13. Other embodiments of mandrels are described, Figs. 3, 5 (not shown). The extrusion press is for the manufacture of piping of lead or non-metallic plastic material.
