[Also in Group XXXVI] A carbon pile regulator comprises two parallel, connected piles one having fewer and thicker carbon discs than the other, and means for simultaneously compressing the two piles. The resistance-elongation characteristics of the piles are arranged to intersect in the operating range of the regulator. Fig. 1 shows the lowresistance pile 8 of relatively thick discs and high-resistance pile 9 of thinner discs in a, housing 15 having cooling fins 16. An armature assembly 7 is associated with a spring diaphragm 35 and electromagnetic coil 6 and is adapted to compress the piles through contact plugs 31 and 33. The armature assembly is balanced. by counterweight 46 through spring member 47. The housing comprises cooling fins 16. Fig. 2 shows a regulator system for generator 51 embodying the regulator comprising the two piles 8 and 9 in series with the shunt field coil 54. Under high. speed no-load conditions only the high-resistance pile 9 is effective, the low-resistance pile 8 being open. As the total resistance of the regulator is decreased the low-resistance pile 8 enters into circuit, and at full load, low speed is carrying most of the load. Under conditions of in-. creasing resistance when the low-resistance pile opens, the high-resistance pile still provides a shunt resistance so that any tendency for arcs across the low resistance pile is decreased. |
