The LED has phosphor particles ( 2 ) with a mean phosphor particle size d₅₀ selected from the range of from 0.1 mum, inclusive, to 1.5 mum, inclusive, in particular the phosphor particles having primary particles ( 4 ) with a mean particle size ( 5 ) selected from the range of from 0.1 mum, inclusive, to 1.0 mum, inclusive. The primary particles, which comprise, for example, an yttrium aluminum garnet (Y₃Al₅O₁₂) doped with cerium, are agglomerated to form the phosphor particles.
