A refrigerator is provided to automatically lift or lower a basket for increasing the convenience of use and prevent hands or impurities from being stuck between side surface of the basket and rails by a panel. A refrigerator includes a main body having at least one or more refrigerating compartments inside to be opened or closed by doors(133) slidingly mounted to the main body. Rails(137) are mounted at both sides of the doors for the sliding of the doors in the to and fro direction of the main body. Baskets(135) are mounted to a rear surface of the doors to be withdrawn along with the doors. Lifting units are mounted below the baskets for lifting or lowering the baskets. Safety units prevent impurities from being stuck between the rails and the baskets, and have panels(152) fixed to the rails by hinges(154) to rotate with respect to the rails. As the baskets are lifted, the panels rotate to block gaps between the rails and side surfaces of the baskets.
