A broadcasting receiver providing a soft keyboard and a method for inputting characters are provided to easily input the characters and display the inputted characters on a screen when inputting the characters using character input keys, which are included in a remote controller. A storage unit(216) stores a soft keyboard, wherein the soft keyboard has the same character input keys as a remoter controller, and a character display window. A graphic unit(212) displays the soft keyboard stored in the storage unit(216) on a screen. A character input processing unit(214) processes character codes corresponding to the plural character input keys, which are transmitted from the remote controller, and then outputs the complete characters. A controller processes the operations of the graphic unit(212) and the character input processing unit(214).
