A system and a method for communicating through a radar frequency band are provided to meet the demands on a data link which is able of matching transmitted and received signals in a system including a transponder which operates at low effective radiated power. A radar(12) generates a radar interrogation signal. Transponders(50,52,54) receive the radar interrogation signal and generate a transponder signal including the first linear frequency modulation pulse having an increasing frequency and the second linear frequency modulation pulse having a decreasing frequency. A detector/processor(40) processes the transponder signal and determines a frequency offset between the radar interrogation signal and the transponder signal.
