METHOD FOR DISTINGUISHING TYPE OF MAGNETIC CARD AND CARD READER EXECUTING THE SAME

A method for identifying a type of a magnetic card and a card reader executing the same are provided to reduce inconvenience of a user by making the card reader identify the type of the magnetic card and need no operation command input part for receiving a user operation command for identifying the type of the magnetic card. A magnetic card reader(203) reads the second and third track information of the magnetic card at the same time by swapping the magnetic card at one time. A debit BIN(Bank ID Number) storing part(205) stores a BIN of a bank issuing a debit card. A controller(201) controls an operation of the card reader and identifies the type of the read magnetic card. A program identifies whether the second and third track information is valid information fit for a protocol. In case that the second track information is valid and information stored in a specific area of card information recorded to the second track is matched with the previously stored BIN, the program identifies the magnetic card as the debit card.
