The picking apparatus has a carriage in which various devices are placed, and a picking head (7) coupled to the carriage and arranged to move horizontally back and forth in relation to the carriage when the carriage is position above the area in which mushrooms grow. A suction pad mechanism (17) sucks and grips mushrooms for picking. A movable camera or scanner (19) is arranged to image the area in which the mushrooms grow.
