A speech recognition method and an apparatus thereof are provided to improve speech recognition success rate by adaptively varying a process deciding a final recognized word according to whether a user selects an alternative word from a list of alternative words. An alternative list in which a predetermined number of words are arranged in a predetermined order is displayed as a speech recognition result of user's speech(71). It is determined whether the user changes the choice of an alternative word from the alternative list for a predetermined standby time(72). When there is no change in the choice of the user for the predetermined standby time, an alternative word on which a cursor is currently located in the alternative list is decided as a final recognized word(73). When there is a change in the choice of the user, the alternative word selected by the user is decided as the final recognized word(77).
