The invention relates to the long term operation of a heterogeneously catalysed gas phase partial oxidation of acrolein in order to form acrylic acid. The temperature of the solid bed catalyst increases over time, and partial oxidation is interrupted and a gas containing oxygen is guided through the solid bed catalyst before the temperature reaches 8 °C.
