An apparatus and a method for transmitting/receiving data in a communication system using a multi-carrier are provided to reduce the amount of signals transmitted to a base station when a terminal of the communication system is a host for selecting the type of segment. A method for transmitting/receiving data in a communication system using a multi-carrier includes the steps of: measuring a channel state, and extracting channel state information corresponding to the channel state(901); estimating the type of segment by using the extracted channel state information, and judging whether to require a change of the segment type currently allocated to a terminal(905); transmitting a message of requesting the change of the segment type to a base station when the change of the segment type is needed(909); and receiving data with the segment type corresponding to a message when receiving a message of permitting the change of the segment type from the base station(913).
