Provided are an arylphenoxy-based transition metal catalyst which can be treated easily, is high in yield and is excellent in thermal stability, arylphenoxy catalyst system for preparing an ethylene homopolymer or a copolymer of ethylene and alpha-olefin, and a method for preparing an ethylene homopolymer or a copolymer of ethylene and alpha-olefin by using the catalyst. The arylphenoxy-based transition metal catalyst is represented by the formula 1, wherein M is a transition metal of group 4; Cp is a cyclopentadienyl anion capable of bonding with a central metal or its derivatives; R1 to R8 are independently H, a halogen atom, a C1-C20 linear or branched alkyl group substituted with at least one halogen atom, a silyl group having a C1-C20 linear or branched alkyl group substituted with at least one halogen atom, a C6-C30 aryl group substituted with at least one halogen atom, a C7-C30 arylalkyl group substituted with at least one halogen atom, a C1-C20 alkylalkoxy group substituted with at least one halogen atom, a C3-C20 alkyl-substituted siloxy group, or a C6-c20 aryl-substituted siloxy group (wherein the substituents can be connected to form a ring).
