An air conditioner and a method of controlling an overload of the same are provided to regulate the desired value of the superheat degree of the indoor device on the basis of the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant. An air conditioner comprises an outdoor device(100) having a compressor(112), an outdoor heat exchanger(113), a refrigerant discharge pressure sensor(154) mounted at a discharge pipe of the compressor to measure the pressure of the discharged refrigerant, a condensation refrigerant temperature sensor(160) installed at the discharge pipe of the outdoor heat exchanger to measure the temperature of the condensed refrigerant, and an outdoor device control unit(152) calculating the cooling degree value, comparing the calculated value with pre-set overload reference value, and re-setting/transferring the desired value of the superheat degree on the basis of the sensing value through the refrigerant discharge pressure sensor and the condensation refrigerant temperature sensor in the cooling operation; and an indoor device(50) containing an indoor heat exchanger(60), an indoor fan(58), an expansion valve(62) controlling the flow rate and expansion of the refrigerant applied from the outdoor device to the indoor heat exchanger, and an indoor device control unit(52) re-setting the superheat degree and controlling the opening degree of the expansion valve according to the desired value of the superheat degree transferred by the outdoor device control unit.
