The storage compartment, e.g. located in a motor vehicle dashboard, consists of an insert (2) large enough to hold a drink can (18), and an open end (4) with a lid. The lid can be made in two forms: one which drops down on a hinge into a horizontal position with a central hole containing a hinged support for the drink can, and a second in which the lid is designed to be separated from the insert and fitted to its open end by a tab (46) engaging with a slot (48). In this version the lid has a central hole (24) and a fixed support (20) for the bottom of the can.
