PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a translucent material having a high space packing rate, less optical scattering and excellent transmittance, and to provide a method for manufacturing the translucent material. SOLUTION: After particles are synthesized by liquid phase synthesis, the particles are not dried but the solution is replaced to introduce thereto a solution or a liquid containing a precipitate containing a composition of an intergranular phase which comprises at least one kind selected from Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, yttrium oxide, silicon oxide, yttrium silicon compound oxide, aluminum silicon compound oxide or a group of compounds having a garnet structure and a lower melting point compared with the melting point of the synthesized particles. The solution or the liquid containing the precipitate of the composition of the intergranular phase is deposited to grow on the surfaces of particles to prepare activated particles, the activated particles three-dimensionally arranged in the solution to obtain a compact, and the compact is sintered.
