<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate soot in the exhaust gas from a diesel engine without increasing the amount of emissions of NO<SB>X</SB>or particulates. <P>SOLUTION: The exhaust gas of the diesel engine 1 is guided to an oxidation catalyst 5, and the NO in the exhaust gas is converted into NO<SB>2</SB>. Then the soot in the exhaust gas is collected by a particulate filter 7, and the exhaust temperature is raised while maintaining an exhaust air-fuel ratio at the level of a lean air-fuel ratio. Then the collected NO<SB>2</SB>in the exhaust gas and the soot are forced to react with each other to combust the soot, and the NO generated by the reaction is absorbed by an NO<SB>X</SB>-absorber 9 arranged on the downstream side of the particulate filter, and is eliminated from the exhaust gas. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT |
