摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate soot in the exhaust gas from a diesel engine without increasing the amount of emissions of NO<SB>X</SB>or particulates. <P>SOLUTION: The exhaust gas of the diesel engine 1 is guided to an oxidation catalyst 5, and the NO in the exhaust gas is converted into NO<SB>2</SB>. Then the soot in the exhaust gas is collected by a particulate filter 7, and the exhaust temperature is raised while maintaining an exhaust air-fuel ratio at the level of a lean air-fuel ratio.
