PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an audio coding method and apparatus which reduce the number of calculations of an audio coding algorithm to improve efficiency of an audio coding process, and to provide an audio coding method and apparatus which reduce the number of calculations required for a psychoacoustic model process of the MPEG-4 AAC algorithm audio encoding. SOLUTION: The audio coding apparatus includes an MDCT block 10 which converts an audio signal of a time region into a signal of a frequency region, and a psychoacoustic model block 13 which determines permissible maximum quantization noise amounts by frequencies by using the conversion result of the MDCT block 10.
