A modulator (10) includes an interferometer waveguide structure (52) formed on an electro-optical substrate (16) , preferably a Z-cut lithium niobate or a Z-cut lithium tantalate. The substrate (16) includes a domain inversion between a region (18) near the first arm (12) and a region (20) near the second arm (14) of the interferometer waveguide structure (52) . In one example, two coplanar strip electrode structures (32, 26; 34, 38) , each extending near at least a portion of the first arm (12) and the second arm (14) , respectively, are electrically coupled to each other. |
