PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lower-cost occupant detection system which has suppressed misdetection by disturbance factors such as wetting of a seat. SOLUTION: The occupant detection system has an electrostatic sensor for a remote place measuring capacitance between a seating part of a seat of a vehicle and a vehicle body and an electrostatic sensor for a near place measuring capacitance at the seating part of the seat. The detection of the occupant on the seat is carried out resulting from the measurement of the electrostatic sensor for the near place and the electrostatic sensor for the remote place.
