Means for clamping together two relatively sliding parts 1, 2, such as a tailstock and lathe bed, comprises an enclosure 11 between opposed faces of the parts, and means 14 for introducing fluid pressure into the enclosure to force other opposed faces of the parts into close frictional contact. Pressure is applied when a hand valve is opened, and is released, when the valve is closed, through a permanently open escape orifice in the enclosure 11. Escaping fluid, which may be lubricating or cutting oil, lubricates the slideways. In a modification, a gib 17, Fig. 6, adjusted by screws 26, is forced against the bed by fluid or pneumatic pressure in a flexible tube 18, 19. |
