PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small-sized, high performance zoom lens and an optical apparatus having the zoom lens. SOLUTION: The zoom lens is composed of a first lens group having a positive refracting power, a second lens group having a negative refracting power, a third lens group having a positive refracting power, and a fourth group lens having a positive refracting power in this order from the object side. The zoom lens allows zooming by moving the four lens groups. In the zoom lens, the first lens group is composed of one lens component. When zooming takes place from the wide angle end to the telephoto end, the second lens group moves toward an image along a projecting locus. An interval between the first and second lens groups is wide and an interval between the second and third lens groups is narrow at the telephoto end compared to those at the wide-angle end.
