PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an optical scanner in which a spot diameter in a main scanning direction is made smaller as far as the diameter of a polygon mirror does not become unnecessarily small, and the miniaturization of the whole apparatus is realized, and to obtain an image forming apparatus using the optical scanner. SOLUTION: The optical scanner has a first optical system 11 which makes a luminous flux emitted from a light source means 1 having one or more light emitting parts incident on the rotating polygon mirror 6 in the state that the width of the incident luminous flux is larger than the width of the deflecting faces of the rotating polygon mirror in the main scanning direction, and a second optical system 78 which leads the luminous flux deflected by the rotating polygon mirror to a surface 9 to be scanned, and the surface to be scanned is scanned with the luminous flux in the main scanning direction by the rotation of the rotating polygon mirror.
