Olefins are isomerized by a double bond shift to a more central position by contacting, in the presence of hydrogen, with a catalyst of a platinum group metal or compound modified by a compound of silver, copper, zinc, cadmium, mercury, tin, lead, arsenic, antimony, bismuth or thallium. Ambient temperature and pressure are the specified process conditions. The catalyst may contain 0.1-500% of modifying compound based on the weight of the platinum group metal, and may be supported on an inert carrier, e.g. charcoal, calcium carbonate, barium carbonate, magnesia, barium sulphate, alumina or sepiolite. Catalysts specified are calcium carbonate supported palladium modified with mercurcy and lead compounds. Olefins specified as feed are butene-1, pentene-1, hexene-1, methylbutene-1, methylpentene-1, and ethylhexene-1. The isomerization of 2-methylpentene-1 to 2-methylpentene-2 is exemplified. |
