PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To promptly detect the presence or absence of generation of the stick slip motion of a printing head. SOLUTION: The printer comprises the printing head which carries out printing to a medium, a motor for moving the printing head, a guide part for guiding the printing head along a predetermined direction, a motor control part which controls the motor, a speed detecting part which detects a moving speed of the printing head, and a judging part which judges whether or not the printing head performs the stick slip motion, on the basis of the moving speed detected by the speed detecting part when the motor control part controls the motor to move the printing head at a constant speed of a predetermined or lower speed along the guide part.
