PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the delay of a timing, caused by a signal processing circuit, to detect the size of a document. SOLUTION: In the process of opening a pressure plate, an angle detecting signal (1) rises, a power source (2) is shifted from a power saving state to a standby state, and a size detecting signal (4) is turned on. When closing the pressure plate, the angle detecting signal (1) then falls, a light source (3) is turned on in the timing of an angle A, the size detection of a document is performed and when the pressure plate is closed to an angle B, the size detecting signal (4) is turned off to determine the size. The light source (3) is then turned off, a first carriage starts moving (7) from the size detecting position to the home position, the reset state of a signal processing circuit controller is canceled (5) and with this reset cancel as a trigger, rising control (6) of the signal processing circuit is executed.
