Precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) aggregates or agglomerates have a specific surface area of from 30 m2/g to 100 m2/g and a mean aggregate diameter of 1pm to 5 pm, and comprising a fraction of fines below 2 pm of less than 20% and ultrafine calcium carbonate particles having a primary acicular particle size of 20 nm to 50 nm and an aspect ratio between 1:2 and 1:10. Pigments or PCC slurries may include the PCC aggregates or agglomerates and may have a solids concentration from 25% to 60% by weight. A coating formulation for the paper making industry may include the PCC aggregates or agglomerates or the pigments or PCC slurries.
