PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backrest device for a chair equipped with a lumber support main body which can comfortably support the back or the waist section. SOLUTION: A flexible back placing material 16 is stretched on the front surface of a back frame 15, and a lumber support 17 comprising a lumber support attaching member 18 and the lumber support main body 20 is provided to constitute this backrest device for a chair. In the backrest device, the lumber support main body 20 comprises a base member 35 and a laterally long hollow pad material 36. In this case, the base member 35 is attached to the front surface of the lumber support attaching member 18 in such a manner that the vertical position can be adjusted.
