A hollow profile insert for a reduced weight building block has two similar half profiles each with a base and outer frame and open to one side. The profiles are reinforced by diagonal ribs (13, 15) which meet at a central sleeve (11). Two profiles are clipped together to form a hollow structure around which the building block is cast, and with a central hole for a reinforcing rod. The blocks are load bearing and can be used for floors, ceilings and walls.
