PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a light transmission type observation device, which observes a specimen cultured in a chamber 50 of an incubator 5, small in size and light in weight. SOLUTION: In the light transmission type observation device, an illuminator 40 includes a light source 2, a condenser lens 20 arranged opposite to a specimen-observing portion 42 and capable of reciprocating motion along a surface of the specimen-observing portion 42, and an optical fiber cable 22a to guide light from the light source 2 to the condenser lens 20. Also the optical device 41 includes an observation optical unit 24, an objective lens 23 arranged opposite to the specimen-observing portion 42 and capable of reciprocating motion along a surface of the specimen-observing portion 42, and an optical fiber cable 22b to guide light from the objective lens 23 to the observation optical unit 24. The condenser lens 20 of the illuminator 40 and the objective lens 23 of the optical device 41 are interconnected with a reciprocating motion device 1 making both of them be transferred along the surface of the specimen-observing portion 42 while keeping a relative positional relationship constant.
