PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of washing a flat membrane element used for a membrane filter device which reduces the aeration amount in a usual state upon flat membrane element washing, and further improves the washing efficiency of a flat membrane element in a region where a washing by means of air bubbles is difficult when solid matter concentration is significantly high, for example. SOLUTION: In the membrane filter device (A) for separating solid content included in sewage from liquid by filtration in activated sewage treatment, the flat membrane element 2 and a cleaning vibration plate 3 are alternately arranged side by side and, by vibrating the cleaning vibration plate 3 and/or the flat membrane element 2 in the up-and-down direction, a cake layer of solid sludge attached to the surface of the flat membrane element 2 is stripped, whereby the washing is performed.
