PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically determine the direction of a document image through simple processing of a low arithmetic load. SOLUTION: A binding means image such as an image of a punch, an image of a staple mark or an image of a staple is detected from an image at the edge of a document image so as to detect a position of a binding portion of a document (S2), and the direction of the document image is determined based on a result of the detection (S3). In such a case, direction correspondence information representing a corresponding relation between the position of the binding portion in the document image and the direction of that document image can be preset, and the direction of the document image is determined based on a detected result of the position of the binding portion and the set direction correspondence information.
