PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal device 60 where infiltration of moisture, impurities and the like can be prevented. SOLUTION: A protrusion 81 is formed on the surface of a substrate body 10A, a projecting part 82 is formed at the surface of an inorganic alignment layer 16 formed along the surface of the protrusion 81, a groove 91 is formed in the surface of a substrate main body 20A, a recessed part 92 is formed at the surface of an inorganic alignment layer 22 formed along the surface of the groove 91 and a sealing material 19 is disposed on the surfaces of the projecting part 82 and the recessed part 92 to seal a liquid crystal layer 50.
