PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection optical unit where a variable diaphragm mechanism can be attached/detached, and the variable diaphragm mechanism can be independently assembled, adjusted, and also, inspected, further, the mechanism can be easily replaced upon the glitch. SOLUTION: Regarding the projection optical unit equipped with a projection optical system 5 including at least two curved mirrors 25 and 28 and the variable diaphragm mechanism 26, and for projecting image light to a screen 7, the variable diaphragm mechanism 26 is constituted so that it can be attached/detached in a direction nearly vertical to a plane formed by a projection reference axis (b) between the curved mirrors 25 and 28 which are separately arranged on the screen side of the variable diaphragm mechanism 26 and on the opposite side, and a projection reference axis (a) to the curved mirror 25 arranged on the screen side of the variable diaphragm mechanism 26 and on the opposite side.
