PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording apparatus which has no need for cleaning the whole scale when the scale is stained, and can avoid such a waste that interchanges a new scale as a stained position is unknown, in the recording apparatus wherein a carriage mounting a recording head scans on a recording medium, and a required recording is performed on the recording medium by delivering an ink from the recording head while the carriage existing at a specified position is detected, and to provide a method for controlling the recording apparatus. SOLUTION: The recording apparatus comprises a means for judging the stain of the scale based on DUTY abnormality of a pulse signal outputted by an optical sensor, and a storing means for storing information on a position where the DUTY abnormality of the pulse signal is generated.
