A lubricating composition comprises a lubricating oil and an oil-soluble polymer or copolymer of an alkoxylated ester prepared by partially esterifying an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid with a phenol or cyclic alcohol and then neutralizing substantially all the free carboxyl groups in the partial ester by reaction with an alkylene oxide. The lubricating oil may be animal, mineral, vegetable or synthetic, examples of synthetic oils being complex esters, diesters, formals, methacrylates or blends thereof. The unsaturated dicarboxylic acid may be maleic or fumaric acid, while the alkylene oxide may be ethylene or propylene oxide. The phenol may be a mono- or poly-phenol, a naphthol, an anthranol or a substitution derivative of any of these, especially an alkyl phenol such as dodecyl phenol. The cyclic alcohol may be mono-, di- or tri-phenyl methanol or ethanol. The alkoxylated ester may be copolymerized with an unsaturated ester (e.g. vinyl acetate), an olefin, an unsaturated nitrile or an anhydride of an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid. In an example, a copolymer of vinyl acetate and an alkoxylated ester (prepared by partially esterifying maleic anhydride with dodecyl phenol and then condensing the partial ester with ethylene oxide) is added to mineral lubricating oil.ALSO:A lubricating composition comprises a lubricating oil and an oil-soluble polymer or copolymer of an alkoxylated ester prepared by partially esterifying an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid with a phenol or cyclic alcohol and then neutralizing substantially all the free carboxyl groups in the partial ester by reaction with an alkylene oxide.
