In Example IV, N-dimethylaminopropyl polybutenyl succinimide is prepared from dimethylaminopropylamine and polybutenyl (M.W.1000) succinic anhydride. In Example VI, the tetraethylene pentamine di-imide of mono (polyisobutylene) succinic acid is prepared from 2 moles of mono (polyisobutylene-M.W.1185) succinic anhydride and 1 mole of tetraethylene pentamine. Specifications 726,785, 760,554, 788,129, 818,254, 833,977 and 906,412 are referred to.ALSO:A lubricating oil composition comprises a major proportion of a lubricating oil and minor proportions of (A) an oil-soluble basic amino nitrogen-containing polymeric detergent, and (B) an oil-soluble polymeric detergent containing acidic polar groups. Additive (A) may be derived from monomers containing primary, secondary or tertiary amino nitrogen including heterocyclic amino nitrogen-containing substances having an ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable group, e.g. copolymers of vinyl pyridines or polyamines with acrylates and methacrylates. Suitable polymers are described in Specifications 818,254, 760,554 and 726,785. Also included are amino alkyl or polyalkylene polyamine derivatives of alkenyl (e.g. C30-200) succinimides, e.g. tetraethylene pentamine diimide of mono-(polyisobutylene) succinic acid. Additive (B) preferably comprises a long linear polymeric hydrocarbon chain having C8-30 alkyl radicals and randomly or uniformly distributed along the chain, either directly or indirectly, acid groups such as carboxyl, anhydride, hydroxyl, nitrile, thiol, acidic phosphorus or sulphonic acid groups, e.g. vinyl stearate/itaconic acid copolymer. Suitable polymers are described in Specifications 906,412, 833,977, and 788,129 and in U.S.A. Specification 2,992,184. Optionally present may be additive (C) of formula <FORM:0973393/C4-C5/1> where R1 is a hydrocarbyl radical, y is 1-4, and X stands for -S-, -S-S-, -Se-, -S-CH2-, -CH2-S-CH2-, -CHR-, -CR2-, -(CH2)m-, -NH- or -O-, where R is methyl or ethyl and m is 1, 2 or 3. Many examples of additives (A), (B) and (C) are given, and suitable lubricating oils include naphthenic, paraffinic and mixed base mineral lubricating oils, oils derived from coal products, alkyl benzenes, polyphenyls and dicarboxylic acid esters. Further optional additives are partial or full esters of phosphoric, phosphorous and phosphonic acids and their thio-derivatives, and P2S5-turpene reaction products, some examples being given. |
