A hydraulic oil distribution arrangement (6') is configured to prioritize and increase oil supply to the separator (3) when the exhaust gas brake (8) is activated. Purifying gases from an engine crankcase (1) uses a centrifugal separator. The engine includes a hydraulic system (5) with an oil pump and an arrangement for distributing oil used for driving the separator and for other purposes (7). The engine also includes an exhaust gas brake for applying additional braking power via an exhaust gas brake throttle. When the brake is activated, the oil distribution arrangement is configured to prioritize and increase oil supply to the separator in order to increase the separation speed and purification capacity of the separator. An independent claim is also included for an internal combustion engine with a centrifugal separator capable of purifying crankcase gases according to the above process.
