A cleaning process for oil tanks (1), especially large tanks, to remove sludge and remaining oil from the sump (5) and where gases can be sucked out (8) comprises leading energy from the combustion (11) of the removed residual gas back into the sludge and/or fluid in the tank sump. An independent claim is also included for a device to operate the above process.
