A power supply system comprising a DC output supplying apparatus; a load apparatus; a backup lithium ion battery connected in parallel with the DC output supplying apparatus and load apparatus and load apparatus; a charging current limiting circuit connected in series with the lithium ion battery for supplying a charging current having an arbitrary value independent of the load variation of the charging path of the lithium ion battery; a switch for disconnecting the lithium ion battery from either the DC output supplying apparatus or the load apparatus or connecting the lithium ion battery to either the DC output supplying apparatus or the load apparatus; and a control circuit for monitoring the voltage value of the charging path, establishing a reference voltage for establishing the arbitrary charging current value for the charging current limiting circuit, and for controlling the switch when the voltage of the charging path exceeds a predetermined voltage value during charging.
