The method involves controlling a central processing unit (15) mounted on a motor vehicle (1) and electronic boxes (6-9) equipped in the wheels (2-5) of the vehicle. The unit controls the transmission, through transmitting antennae disposed near the respective wheels, of an electromagnetic identification request signal with the reception of which the boxes transmit a signal comprising an identification code of the wheel. The request signal consists of an electromagnetic signal modulated by binary data forming a specific coded message dedicated to the boxes and identifiable only by the boxes. The central processing unit is integrated with a radiofrequency receiver receiving signals transmitted by the electronic boxes. An independent claim is also included for a motor vehicle wheels` position locating device comprising transmitting antennae and a central processing unit.
