PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus and an image processing method whereby an image forming apparatus such as a printer can output image data providing processability of correction or the like even when a resource quantity such as a memory included in the image forming apparatus is small. SOLUTION: A coding section 12 codes image data read by an image read section 11 into data of the JPEG form and stores the resulting data to a storage section 13. In this case, a division unit discrimination section 15 particularizes a unit of image data to be divided, and when the amount of the image data coded by the coding section 12 reaches a size particularized by the division unit discrimination section 15, an RST insertion section 16 inserts a reset marker to the storage section 13 to reset the coding processing by the coding section 12.
