PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus with which improved transfer characteristics are achieved. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: an intermediate transfer body 61 holding a toner image thereon; a substrate 73 supporting the intermediate transfer body 61; and a secondary transfer roller 80 disposed so as to be brought into contact with the intermediate transfer body 61 and separated therefrom. When the secondary transfer roller 80 is in contact with the intermediate transfer body 61, a recording medium P is introduced between the secondary transfer roller 80 and the intermediate transfer body 61, and a toner image is transferred to the recording medium P.
