PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for operating a coke oven, by which deposited carbon can be removed without causing the lowering of temperature and the flashback of a coke oven gas path can be prevented. SOLUTION: This method for operating the coke oven, comprising blowing and burning a coke oven gas (C gas) in the combustion flue of a combustion chamber, discharging the combustion exhaust gas into the discharging flue of the combustion chamber without blowing the C gas in the discharging flue, and then repeatedly switching the C gas valves 14a, 14b of a C gas path 4 to change the direction of the gas flow, is characterized by having an air-introducing process for introducing air into the C gas path 4 and purging the C gas of the C gas path 4, and an air flow rate-reducing process for reducing the flow rate of the air introduced into the C gas path 4.
