A catalyst for use in the reaction of carbon monoxide with steam is prepared by heating a mixture comprising a major proportion of ferric oxide and minor proportions of a chromium salt or oxide and copper sulphate to a temperature below the decomposition temperature of the copper sulphate. A minor proportion of an oxide or salt of potassium, aluminium or magnesium may also be present in the mixture. The catalyst may be reactivated by increasing the proportion of steam to carbon monoxide. In an example 100 parts Fe2O3, 5 parts Cr2O3 and 3 parts K2O were mixed, an aqueous solution containing 4 parts CuSO4 was added, and the mixture was heated to 350 DEG C. and moulded into tablets. Comparative catalysts omitting the CuSO4 or replacing it with CuCO3 were also prepared. These catalysts were used to react steam with pure CO and also with a raw gas comprising, in addition, CO2, O2, CH4, H2, N2 and H2S. |
